The Oscars Cabinboys...

I'm pretty much crap at picking the Oscars by the films and film aspects I personally enjoy, so, all I'm offering here are the Oscar nominees that would win the Cabinboy awards. Note that I'll only make picks of films I've seen (which almost seems unfair to Jeff Bridges, whom, sadly, I just haven't gotten around to catching in CRAZY HEART). My picks are in green. Nominated films I haven't seen are in gray.

If you press me to make actual Oscar picks, I think that most awards would be split between HURT LOCKER and PRECIOUS. Altho, I really feel that A SINGLE MAN should have made it into the best picture list, and the Pixar short about the babies and the clouds (can't remember the title) was robbed of a spot in animated shorts.

While I really do think that Wes Anderson finally found his true wheelhouse with FANTASTIC MR. FOX, Pixar's UP just rocks so amazingly hard, it can't compete.

A SERIOUS MAN is a damn entertaining and well-crafted film of parables. I feel like not enough people gave it a chance and I hope it comes back onto the big screen for a while.

No fair putting Carey Mulligan up against Gabourey Sidibe. I have to go with Gabourey, tho. I don't know if one should be rewarded for serendipity, but I do feel like she does more in that role for that film than anyone else could have. Carey is lovely and perfect as the knowing ingenue of the times, but I think she's got more to give. I would've liked to have seen Olivia Williams up for best supporting, altho again, I'd still have to give it to the PRECIOUS actress. If there was a best supporting couple category, it would have to go to Saarsgard's friends in AN EDUCATION. Heck, the girlfriend should've been nominated on her own anyway, along w Olivia Williams.

I'm gonna leave the sound categories blank, cuz frankly, I've got no clue. For visual effects, I think that DISTRICT 9's effects did just a little bit more for its film than AVATAR's. I'm certain AVATAR will win based on its film-making tech, and the creation of an immersive virtual-as-real world, but 9 did such an amazing job blending the fantastic with the ghetto so seamlessly that I think the visual effects did more work with an almost greater production challenge.

For adapted writing, I can only ask—have you seen IN THE LOOP? Then you know why it should win. For original writing, SERIOUS MAN beats UP for its wonderfully nerdy levels of meaning and significance.
