Not the first theater I'd choose to see a film, Assembly Square does (soon to be did) serve as a convenient enough outlet option for new and lingering mainstream flicks. The livejournal reports that it will be shut down on Monday, Jan 15, and uses the word "demolished." I wonder if there's a chance of getting any fixtures or chairs before or after that happens. Maybe I'll be able to force a last visit for a screening this week.
Will some smart guy w the time and money and whatever it takes to make it happen put in a rec facility with some sand volleyball courts? Please?!
Or, if not there, then maybe in the old Pompanoosuc Mills showroom near Kendall Square? Since they moved to some more posh location in the city months ago, that space has been conspicuously empty. C'mon, it's Cambridge. No doubt the rent is not-so-cheap, but if you keep fees at a decent/low price, maybe keep some late late hours (volleyball allnighter anyone?), team up w the local eat and drink establishments (or get a license for either/both), run tournaments on the weekend, you KNOW you'd get all those nerdy volleyball types to join up, and there's gotta be some good creative arrangements to be made with all the techcos in the area.
Build it and they will come.
Hrmm... The showroom might only be enough space for two tight courts, but Assembly Square's definitely got room. And, I suppose hardwood indoor courts would be acceptable as well.
Get some ping pong tables in there, too.
I'm just sayin'.
Thanks to Paris Jen for the headzup on the theater closing. =)
Keep on keepin on~
