I think it's safe to say that Jacob is on the Island in the 1970s, and aware of what's transpiring between the Others and the DI. Certainly, events like breaking the truce, the healing of Ben, and the Incident, couldn't go by unnoticed. So, he knows that there are some odd ducks among the DI. In 1974 and 1977 he KNOWS that time travellers have arrived from the future and who they are. So, he goes and visits them at different times in their lives, before their time-jumping departures in 2004 and 2007, perhaps influencing their lives, but definitely physically connecting with them, even if it's only a touch, imbuing them with Something, before they end up in the past.
Jacobean mind melds, anyone? Perhaps, once reunited with Sun, they're meant to put Humpty Jacob back together again...?
