inconvenient truth and truthiness...

Please give a listen to (and have a look-see at) what ex-Next President of the United States, Al Gore, has to say about global warming...

AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH hits theaters on May 24. I've caught the trailer for it a couple times and I'm definitely checkin it out. I hope this is a doc that will appeal to anyone who gives a damn about the planet we live on, but I'm kinda concerned that the trailer may do the film a disservice. The pacing and treatment and even the music of the trailer play like an ad for THE CORE or DEEP IMPACT, which, based on the content, is probably an almost thoughtful bit of promotion, at least on the surface. It's just that Bay and Bruckheimer's eco-disaster flicks are already Out There, so the trailer for this documentary on the case for global warming and Al Gore's commitment to reversing mankind's negative impact on its home, take on the modern B-movie flavor of what came before, y'know?

Maybe that'll get the kids in the seats, tho?

In apparent response, the Competitive Enterprise Institute (now THERE's a meaningful name you know you can trust, no?) tells us that carbon dioxide is "essential to life..." because... "we breathe it out..."

Vote Carbon Dioxide - Glaciers in 2006! U! S! A!

*sigh*

Thanks to Joe for passing along the maddening news...

Keep on keepin on~

p.s. GOD! I can't feckin beLIEVE this garbage! Thank you, Ministry of Information...

I've heard about the Gore movie, it looks good, and there's supposedly a Futurama reference in there... So that alone makes it worth watching.

You've seen the episodes, but I'm gonna ramble a bit here anyhow as I'm draggin my feet on a bit of work just now...

There was a Kristin Gore on the writing staff of FUTURAMA. I always assumed she was his daughter. And Gore himself made more than one appearance on the show. In one he was his 20th century self, leader of some spacetime action rangers. Apparently this post comes w the office of Veep ("It's in the Constitution!")

The rangers featured Nichelle Nichols, Gary Gygax (when he first meets Fry, he rolls a 10-sided die to decide whether or not it's "a pleasure to meet you!" - genius!), Stephen Hawking, and Deep Blue.

His 31st century self appears in an episode on global warming (caused by robots!). In an intro to a symposium on the topic, he addresses the gathered scientists w something like - "You might be familiar with my book THE BALANCE OF EARTH, or the more popular HARRY POTTER AND THE BALANCE OF EARTH..."

Feckin Fox.

I felt badly about SOUTH PARK's take on him in "Manbearpig" a little while back. They're so good at speedily turning around what's hot-topical and blasting radical personalities and targets on either end of the spectrum, but this was just... sad.

I only hope the people who really belly-laughed at that episode know someone who will drag them to see INCONVENIENT TRUTH. Or at least tune them into one of those FUTURAMAs or that SNL opener, heh.

Allright. I should get back to looking a little busy for a while before lunch. =)

Beware! Sort of a "spoiler," as an excerpt appears in part of Gore's presentation, and so, the film...

Here's that FUTURAMA reference Zorky mentioned...
