smugglers, samurai, romance, and schlock @the Brattle =)

A report on upcoming movie options at the Brattle Theater in Harvard Square. Also, some sing-a-long action (which I will sit out) at the Coolidge Corner Theater in Brookline!

Still two more nights of DISAPPEARANCES, the mystical mellow mood piece about a retired whiskey smuggler in the 30s going back into the biz for one last run to save his farm. Along the way he and his son encounter whiskey-loving monks, a band of Canadian "wolverine" pirates, and their family's mysterious past. Starring a very excellent Kris Kristofferson as Quebec Bill, the smuggler-father.

There's a break in the DISAPPEARANCES run tonight for an 8pm screening of SHINOBI! Looks to be some gorgeous martial arts madness! =)

I'll be recording LOST, so if that's what's holding you back, I say get thee to SHINOBI and I'll let you watch my copy later! =)

Meanwhile, over at the MFA tonight is STALKER, from the director of the original SOLARIS, and part of the Russian Fantastik Film Festival.

On Friday, the Brattle's "Great Romances II" series kicks off with THE PRINCESS BRIDE! The series collects some classic Oscar -worthy romances as well as some old school odd-couple affairs, and finishes off with a two-day run of CASABLANCA, in honor of Black Wednesday, which in turn leads into a week of the Bugs Bunny Film Festval! Check out the schedule and let me know if there's something you'd like to check out. I'm definitely up for a Sunday show of PHILADELPHIA STORY (man, where is that snappy dialogue today?).

LOVE BITES: 80s POWER BALLADS

Once bitten, twice shy? In need of just a little patience this Valentine's Day? Well, have we got a sing-a-long for you! Forget the chocolates and cutesy greeting cards, this is the sing-a-long made for those of us who've been burned by the fires of love -- and who just can't help but let their long hair flow in the wind and sing about it! Put your fist in the air and join in the chorus as we present some of the most awesome (and awesomely bad) videos from the decade when rockers weren't afraid to turn the amps down a notch to express their vulnerable sides ... with the aid of teased hair, fog machines, candles and montages, of course!

Saturday, Feb. 10.
MOULIN ROUGE

Leather pants and power ballads not your style? Still believe in the power of love, truth and beauty? Well, break out the absinthe, top hats and glitter for this sing-a-long celebration of Baz Lurhman's sweeping, super romantic, pop-tastic update of the movie musical. Grab that special someone and prepare to celebrate Valentine's just a few days early by singing your hearts out! And just in case you can't remember all the words to songs like "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Like a Virgin," we'll have on-screen subtitles for all the songs, plus nifty props scattered throughout the theatre and plenty of chances for audience participation.

Keep on keepin on~
